Devotional Thoughts:

Dig Deeper

This hen has 16 chicks under her wings of protection.  This is obviously the picture that the Psalmist is referring to in Psalm 36:7.  “How priceless is your unfailing love!  Both high and low among men find refuge in the shadow of your wings.”

The Hebrew word “kanaph” means both corner and wings.  This contribute to the Jewish concept described in the prior devotional about their prayer shawls

It seems that Jesus is alluding to this picture of the overshadowing wings of God’s protection when he stood outside of Jerusalem and said, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing” - Matt.23:37.  When Jesus said this He was in Jerusalem because He knew it was time for Him to be crucified.  Jesus knew that the Jewish people listening would understand the concept of the Law of Moses “protecting” them from the full impact of sin in this life.  However, Jesus also knew that this protection would not extend into eternity.  Jesus came to fulfill the law so that He could protect us from the impact of sin beyond the grave and into eternity.

Paul understood this when he wrote Galatians 3:24 “So the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ that we might be justified by faith.”

Prayer:  Jesus, I do not want to be like those in Jerusalem who were unwilling to to except the covering of your undeserved grace.  I want to be your child, please cover me with your love.  Amen.
